Travelling with dogs in the Paznaun valley
The Paznaun valley is a dog-friendly place. The mountains in particular offer a perfect high-alpine climate for all sorts of animals, including dogs. However, please respect the local animals that live in the mountains, especially grazing cattle!
Stay on the marked trails and keep a distance of 20 to 50 metres if you come across grazing cattle to avoid frightening them. If the animals appear stressed or agitated, keep your dog away from them and on a short leash.
If you prefer to ride up to the mountains by cable car, your dog is welcome to hop on board. As a holder of a Silvretta Card Premium, you can even take your pet on the cable cars for free.
NB: On all cable cars as well as on public transport, dogs must be muzzled.

More useful tips for hiking with dogs:
- Respect leash regulations: On certain routes and sections, dogs have to be kept on a leash. Read up on local regulations before your trip and ideally carry the leash with you at all times!
- Check the local infrastructure: Make sure to check in advance whether there are plenty of water sources or mountain restaurants along your selected route, and carry supplemental water just in case!
- Be prepared for encounters with other animals: Keep in mind that you might encounter other dogs or grazing cattle during your hike. It’s advisable to know how your dog will react in a situation like this – ideally, not scared or nervous.
On hot summer days, both you and your dog might crave a quick dip. The mountain lakes and streams of the Paznaun valley offer perfect opportunities for a cool-off, whether you only dip your toes or dive right in.
It’s also a nice idea to take your dog with you when you go cross-country skiing. The Paznaun valley boasts a multitude of amazing cross-country trails where you and your tail-wagging buddy can enjoy the snow-covered landscapes and crisp mountain air.
